The types of bamboo used for basketry today are madake and mosochiku, mainly taken from upstream on the Abe and Tenryū Rivers. Three-year-old bamboo is preferred for its moderate moisture retention and because it has not yet hardened. The bamboo is used after its oils have been removed by boiling and sun exposure.
