The dogs sitting by the stove were owned by Shiho. The black-mottled pup got wet after taking a bath and is warming himself. The other seems not to have washed himself yet. When released, this work was highly praised for Shiho’s ability to differentiate wet and dry hair animals through illustration. Shiho’s depiction of these animals immediately grabs our attention. The fire poker and small charcoal briquettes suggest there is a stove near the pups. The arrangement is exquisite and is characteristic of Shiho in his mature years.
