Chartered in 1791, the First Bank of the United States was a national bank championed by Alexander Hamilton as means to stabilize the the nation's credit and strengthen the federal government under the new Constitution. Jefferson and others who came to be associated with the Democratic Republican party strongly opposed its establishment as anti-democratic.
