This lithograph is based on a painting by Francis Bicknell Carpenter (1830-1900) depicting the moment that President Abraham Lincoln first introduced the Emancipation Proclamation to his Cabinet, on July 22, 1862.
Depicted, left to right, are: Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase, President Lincoln, Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Interior Caleb B. Smith, Secretary of State William Seward, Postmaster General Montgomery Blair, and Attorney General Edward Bates.
