As 17th century Dutch artists became increasingly specialized, collaborative efforts became more frequent. In this example, Willaerts painted the seascape while Ormea painted the fish still-life in the foreground. These elements would have appealed to the national preoccupations with the sea, upon which many Dutch relied for their livelihood, and with the scientific investigation of the natural world.
