The fisherman of the Bientina swamp, one of the largest lakes in Tuscany, is portrayed after a fishing trip in his private space, within the walls of a desolately poor house. The painting is set at sunrise: the light filters through the window and accentuates the gaunt physiognomy of the man. The painting, created by Cristiano Banti in 1872, as documented by the inscription at the bottom right, attests the artist's interest in the effects of sunlight and underlines a sensitivity towards figures set in nature.
