Libraries are the center of academic life on any college campus, and the American Missionary Association's college libraries were quite unique. The murals in the background were by Aaron Douglas. The noted Harlem Renaissance painter formed Fisk University's Art Department where he taught for 27 years. Poet Arna Bontemps was Fisk’s librarian from the 1940s until the 1960s.
