"Five Generations on Smith's Plantation, Beaufort, South Carolina"

After the Union Army occupied the Sea Islands region of coastal South Carolina, photographer Timothy O’Sullivan captured this portrait of an enslaved family on the J.J. Smith Plantation. Alexander Gardner displayed this image along with others from O'Sullivan's spring 1862 journey in his gallery in Washington D.C. in September 1863.
