Scorel painted four series of portraits of the Utrecht Jerusalem pilgrims. In this series we see five of them, who most likely all together made the pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1541.Scorel introduced a number of important compositional improvements to this last series. Whereas the previous series seemed more like a row of individuals placed next to each other, the five pilgrims here form a cohesive group. Since 1880, the panel has been alternately attributed to Jan van Scorel and his student, the portraitist Anthonie Mor.
