Besides making public appeals for donations, the organizations also held more active collection drives. On 21 October 1914, the board of the committees for assisting families of the Tartu city and county’s reservists and national defence force members held a “flag day.” During the day, about 250 donation collectors went around town fastening chest pins with the flags of Russia’s allies – France, Britain, Belgium, Serbia and Japan – on chests of people, asking them to make donations. A total of 4,018 roubles was raised in one day for soldiers’ families.
