Japanese artisan Mayu Nakata pays tribute to traditional techniques with her unique pan-Asian approach. Her work has been exhibited throughout Japan and across Asia, burnished by a desire to bridge age-old learnings and forms of expression with a new generation of makers.
An expression of tradition that transcends ancient techniques, this rounded vessel is a metaphor for
the strength of the Asian character. Using age-old kinma lacquer techniques originating from Thailand and Myanmar, Nakata carves the lacquer deeper still, allowing her to create complex patterns and more profound colour. The resulting surface lustre is akin to the colour of fire, giving rise to the artist’s own belief that the flame is an expressive symbol for
the strong, flexible spirit inherent to the people
of her region.
