Unglazed wares, such as this flask, were predominantly made for utilitarian purposes and are closely associated with daily life. Vessels of this shape with a circular body and tall handles are sometimes called “pilgrim flasks” after their use by travelers, including those making pilgrimages. The handles allowed the vessel to be attached to a person’s belt or a horse’s saddle. The body of the vessel is decorated with dynamic geometric designs in raised relief, which were created by the use of molds. The central medallion features a sun with radiating rays surrounded by two concentric bands containing zigzag and circular motifs. This design may depict a solar symbol.
