Written by Antonio Machado (1875-1939). “Flies” appeared in Machado’s first publication, Soledades (1907), in a section titled “Humorisms, fantasies, annotations.” A Spanish poet born in the city of Sevilla, he became associated with a group of novelists, poets, essayists, and philosophers active in Spain at the time of the Spanish-American War (1898), known as the Generation of 1898. They were committed to cultural and aesthetic renewal, and often linked with modernism. Antonio Martorell is a multifaceted and versatile Puerto Rican artist who has distinguished himself as a printmaker, painter, draughtsman, creator of installations, designer of scenarios and costumes, writer, and illustrator. His fondness for portraits, the art of calligraphy and the theatre arts are well known and represented in his works.
