Thousands of flamingos congregate on Lake Magadi to feed on microalgae, shrimp and shellfish that proliferate in the waters. The crystals of sodium sesquicarbonate of the lake are considered the purest in the world; they have been exploited for more than a century to produce sodium carbonate, used in glass and detergents production.
