From almost the time of its founding to 1717, Seville's Royal Alcázar palace housed the headquarters of the House of Trade with the Indies. Over the years, more buildings were added. These were necessary for the functioning of the institution, such as warehouses, barns, and pens. This plan, from the late 16th century, shows an annex to the House of Trade's offices, with a proposed space for use by the Treasury. The Plaza de la Contratación—around which many of these buildings no longer in existence were erected—is visible.
