The first iron ore was raised at Florence Mine in 1923, ten years after sinking of its first shaft was begun. The sinking of a second shaft was begun in 1940 and a new pit head opened in 1947. The mine closed in 1980 but was partly reopened by redundant miners and worked on a small scale until 2006. When the site was listed Grade II in October 2018, it was described as one of the best surviving mining sites of any type nationally.
