The ancient cloisonne enameling technique of Japan was used to decorate metal objects. In this technique, metal wires are bent to form a network of cells that form the pattern into which the enamel paste was filled. It was then fired at a very high temperature to melt the translucent glass-like enamel and create patterns of intense colours. This vase has a black background against which is a tree in blossom, flowers, and birds.
