The word "Softail" denoted a Harley-Davidson® model that appeared to have a rigid back end with no shock absorbers. In fact, the rear shocks were hidden underneath the motorcycle. This gave the rear of the model the clean look of the old rigid-ended "hardtail" vintage motorcycles, but with the full benefit of full rear suspension. Riders no longer had to choose between classic styling and modern comfort.
