If debris is allowed to accumulate in tunnels, it can disrupt the daily operation of the Underground system, so regular cleaning is important. Until the 1990s, the tunnels and tracks were cleaned by hand. This brush, with stiff bristles made of horsehair, is an example of the type of equipment used. The cleaners, usually women, were known as 'fluffers', because they removed fluff and dirt from the tunnel floors. They worked at night when track maintenance took place and the power for the rails was switched off.
