Death Race is a controversial arcade game. Manufactured by Exidy Incorporated and released in 1976, the game was based on the 1975 film "Death Race 2000," starring Sylvester Stallone, and was originally entitled Pedestrian. Players used steering wheel controllers to run over "gremlins" that appeared on the screen. When hit, the gremlins screamed and were replaced by tombstones. Due to the game's limited graphical capabilities, the gremlins resembled human stick figures. This combined with the original game title led some people to believe that players were actually killing humans, not gremlins. The game sparked the first organized protests over a video game, the National Safety Council denounced it, and the television show "60 Minutes" aired an episode focusing on the psychological impacts of games. Due to so much protest, only around 500 arcade machines were made, making this a rare, sought-after game.
