Fob seal

First half of the 19th century

Musée de l'Archéologie de l'Ontario

Musée de l'Archéologie de l'Ontario
London, Canada

A carved stone or glass disc (top) that would have originally been part of a fob seal was recovered from the Plough Inn site when it was excavated by MTO in 1995. The site has been identified as a mid-nineteenth century tavern, but otherwise very little information is available on it. It is located near Orillia, Ontario and is one of a small cluster of Euro-Canadian and Indigenous archaeological sites in the area. The seal makes a stamp of a man’s profile, as shown by the impression made by an archaeologist at the site (bottom).
