This is a kind of stationery paper that was used to practice handwriting, and it was also called a writing book (pilchaek). Writing cardboard was made by folding paper in a standard width like a folding screen, with hard covers on its front and back for protection. This form of binding is called concertina binding (jeolcheopjang or cheopjang). Its cover is wrapped by fabric for greater durability, and its paper is oiled for lasting preservation. It consists of twelve panels of folded cards made of hard paper bound by concertina binding. Oil paper is plastered to the inside and a wooden pad is fixed onto the left and right edges of each fold to prevent it from becoming misshapen. The exterior is wrapped with hemp cloth inscribed with the sentence “此物代用紙千功用物也 (This is elaborately made to use instead of paper).”
