As the bearer of the divine message, the Qu’ran is the single most important document in Islam and is frequently the object of artistic elaboration. This page from an early Qu’ran offers a fairly typical layout for this period, with its horizontal arrangement on the page and few lines of text. The red dots indicate vocal cues for reading the text aloud during prayer, and the pyramid of golden dots indicates the start of a new verse.
