These paintings – wall decorations known since the end of the 19th century – became especially popular in the Powiśle Dąbrowskie area. They were created on paper and canvas as well as directly on walls – around the stove and various sacred pictures. Lime, clay and soot were initially used to make them, later pigment paints.

The Ethnographic Museum of Kraków has in its collection 75 such folk paintings gathered by Władysław Hickel in Powiśle Dąbrowskie around 1905.
