Another of Freeth’s artworks was exhibited in the 1953 exhibition. Footballer in the Snow shows sparse crowd and frozen conditions suggesting bleak times.
In the early 1950s Watford Football club were languishing at the bottom of the Third Division South, having to seek to be re-elected to the league in 1950-51.
Perhaps Freeth’s far from optimistic representation of this game reflects this bleak condition of his local team at this time, out in the cold!
