Footed Beaker

9th or 10th century AD

The Khalili Collections

The Khalili Collections

The beaker is decorated with two running ibexes, their heads turned backwards and their horns joined at the tip. Around the base is a frieze of palmettes, some of them terminating in stylised birds' heads [see drawings]. Like the animals which appear on Fatimid rock crystals, their bodies are decorated with shallow-cut circles.
