Footed Bowl

Early 16th century

Museo Poldi Pezzoli

Museo Poldi Pezzoli
Milano, Italy

This bowl with its intense amethyst colouring is one of the most important pieces in the collection.
The cup is flared and characterized by oblique ribbing. It rests on a fluted stem sprayed with gold.
This type of object, probably a fruit dish, was in common use, sometimes being made of rock crystal, in other cases of glass coloured and painted.
Coloured glass, imitating the nuances and precious reflections of precious and semi-precious stones, was made by adding metal oxides to the glass paste.
