This painting was commissioned by the Underground Electric Railway Company in 1921. The bold design, typical of Charles Paine's style, was extremely popular at the time, and reproductions sold well for many years. London Zoo features on more Underground posters than any other subject. At least two per year were produced throughout the 1920s. Ironically the zoo is not actually on the Underground, and is a long walk from either Regent's Park or Camden Town stations.
