Ford's Theatre as Office Building

Ford's Theatre

Ford's Theatre
Washington, D.C., United States

The federal government purchased the original Ford's Theatre on July 12, 1866 and reconfigured it as an office building. The first two floors stored and processed veterans’ pension records and employed hundreds of clerks who handled claims. The second floor also contained the Surgeon General’s office library and editorial offices for the multi-volume Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion. The third floor held the Army Medical Museum.
