The safest way for settlers to cross rivers on the Oregon Trail was to pay a ferry company for passage. Emigrants who were unwilling to pay the fare or needed to cross in an unpopulated area used more inventive methods. This drawing shows a group that has attached logs to the side of their wagons likely in an effort to make them more buoyant.
