Built in the 1870s as a cheese factory, the building was converted into a steam laundry in c 1891. The factory supplied dairy products to London via the Great Western Railway, whose main line between London and Bristol ran close by.

The cheese factory closed in 1891 and the building was converted to become the Swindon Steam Laundry Company.
