The Defence Line of Amsterdam is 135 kilometres long, consists of 46 forts and was built between 1880 and 1914. Before that, between 1805 and 1810, the colonel and engineer Cornelis Krayenhoff prepared inundations and access posts around Amsterdam, establishing a clear predecessor to the Defence Line.
