Fort Ross, in what is now Sonoma County, California, was established in 1812 by the Russian-American Company to serve as a agricultural supply base for Russian interests in Alaska. The site was home to California's first windmills, as well as the first major shipbuilding efforts in the state. After its decline in the early 1840s, the site, used as a ranch, was sold to various private interests until being purchased by the State of California in 1906. Fort Ross was designated as California Historic Landmark #5 in 1932.
