Fossil flowering plant

Senckenberg Nature Museum Frankfurt

Senckenberg Nature Museum Frankfurt
Frankfurt am Main, Germany

This unassuming fossil, which has an age of 125 million years, represents the shoot of one of the oldest flowering plants known to date. The heavily worn leaves indicate that this likely was an aquatic plant. At the end of the shoot, single carpels are concentrated in a tuft-like fashion. Flowering plants from the Early Cretaceous period are extremely rare and are only shown in a small handful of museums worldwide.
