According to Barthe's biographer, Dr. Margaret Vendreyes, Haiti's President Dumarsais Estime commissioned the artist to create the 40 foot bronze equestrian statue in 1948. The image was not unveiled, however, until 1953 at Haiti's Place des Héros de l'Indépendence in Port-au-Prince.
