View of the fountain on the porch from inside Casa Vicens in Barcelona.
The picture shows the circle with a metal grid that collected rainwater and channelled it to the fountain. The lattice that shielded the space from direct sunlight can also be seen.
Casa Vicens was Gaudí’s first work. It was commissioned by a ceramics manufacturer and built between 1883 and 1885. The property was located on the road between Gràcia and Sant Gervasi, now the street called Carrer de les Carolines. The house was later enlarged and rearranged when the street was widened, which resulted in modifications to the garden boundary and the entrance to the house. One of the most important features was the ornamental waterfall in the garden, which was demolished to make way for other buildings.
