Fountain scene in front of a palace

Signed J G Platzer. This painting, like Dancing scene with palace interior, also depicts a scene of bacchanalian inspiration. Here, half naked figures are seen interacting in a fountain in front of a palace. The erotic expression of the figures in a combination with the visual attributes like pearls clearly corresponds with earlier depictions of the myth of Venus. However, as the painting is made as a twin to Dancing scene with palace interior, it is possible that this motif, like the other, derives from the Odyssey.

For a large part of the 18th century there was more of a fusion of the two that over time transcended into the new styles and ideas of the times. The paintings of Johann Georg Platzer are in many ways a product of that blending of styles. Platzer was born in South Tyrol, but spent most of his career in Vienna, mostly painting genre and historical scenes preferably on copper, since the material allowed a different kind of detailed complexity.
