This is one of the two “four cornered hats” that form part of the pre-Columbian collection of the MALI. Based on the type, shape and decoration we know that it possibly corresponds to the Huari style, a tradition related to the expansive state that originated in the Ayacucho area towards 600 AD. Made using a needle applying knotted techniques with cut pile (simili velour), this hat was probably used as a distinctive element of high class in battle or ceremonial rituals. Evidence of their use exists in similar examples; they were also represented on ceramic pots where figures are shown bearing them and wearing fine tunics.
