Julian Opie has created five major wall paintings for the corridors of the unit, including floating ducks and flying pigeons. He photographed these birds in Cornwall and then distilled them into their simplest forms, so that they resemble symbols or hieroglyphs. Patients at Eileen Skellern 1 asked for one of the artworks to feature birds as they felt they represent a sense of freedom. One patient said ‘they are a light in my life.’
