This drawing comes from a lost drawing-book from the workshop of Gentile da Fabriano. His workshop was continued after his death in 1427 by his collaborator Pisanello and his assistants. It marks the transition from the anonymous medieval model book to the personal sketchbook of the Renaissance. In this drawing Pisanello demonstrates his interest in the depiction of human anatomy.
