These four young rail enthusiasts were pictured at Walthamstow Central Underground station on 1 September 1968. They are waiting to see one of the new Victoria line trains that had begun service that day. It was the first completely new London Underground line for 60 years. The first train left the station at 7.32am, operated by train driver William Harvey. It was packed with people wanting to be a part of Underground history. The tiled recess behind the bench in this photo was designed by Julia Black. It was based on an orange tapestry pattern by William Morris, who had lived in the Walthamstow area.
