The canvas follows in the footsteps of a melodramatic representation of Manzoni’s novel where the characters embody the ethical and emotional faces and expressive gestures of those states of mind. The staging is deliberately anti-monumental and anti-picturesque and the setting is the inside of a poor household where the Manzoni’s “modest” characters are the protagonists of a ‘popular story’.
