Fragment of Lex Italicense

Since ancient times, all Roman municipalities were governed by the same law, which Emperor Domitian gave its final version. This has reached us practically complete thanks to the discovery of the law of the Municipium Flavium Irnitanum, a small town close Osuna (Seville).

The discovery of other similar inscriptions belonging to the Malacitani, Salpensani, Villonensis and Ostiponensis municipalities, have allowed to know that all municipalities were governed by the same law regulating municipal life in all aspects.

The fragment we know of the Lex Italicense partially corresponds to the content of the headings 90 and 96 of the Lex Irnitana, and deals specifically with the marking of judgments, and the fine which should pay who conscientiously act against the law.

Today is exhibited in the private collection of Condes de Lebrija in Seville.
