3rd century

National Museum of Slovenia

National Museum of Slovenia
Ljubljana, Slovenia

Parts of armour were found in the vicinity of the fortress at Hrušica. They belong to Roman military parade equipment. Such equipment was worn by Roman cavalry soldiers during displays that were intended for training but also had a ritual significance. The metal chest plate of the armour bears a depiction in relief of the goddess Minerva with a helmet. Minerva among other things was the goddess of military skills and the protectress of military parade grounds. The eagle above her symbolizes Jupiter, the supreme god. Jupiter and Minerva together with Mars and Victoria were among the most important gods that protected the Roman army.
