Francis Bacon (1561-1626) lawyer, politician, eminent essayist and philosopher; Lord Chancellor and 1st Baron Verulam, 1618; Viscount St Alban, 1621 (see also Morris DPG549). DPG445 ultimately derives from a full-length original known in a copy at Gorhambury (Earl of Verulam). According to a tradition recorded on a label on the verso, DPG445 was given by Bacon himself to the Andrew family of Wandsworth and passed by descent to the donor.
