Elected in 1932, during the depths of the Great Depression, Roosevelt served until his death in 1945 near the end of World War Two. His leadership gave Americans hope and confidence to face domestic hardships and to conquer foreign foes. Many voters adored Roosevelt and remained lifelong Democrats.
