The two fantasy dresses were commissioned by the museum for its permanent exhibition from Stephan Hann, a Berlin fashion designer. The costumes feature a wide range of materials and pick up on stylistic elements of traditional regional costumes as well as historic fashion ideas, such as the blossom at the woman’s skirt waist, which is made from wire and beads. The garments serve as an invitation to reflect on the theoretical construct of a transnational European identity, and to discuss how this is influenced by local, regional and national identities.
