The Saxon Elector Frederick the Wise was able to assert his political interests without acts of war by clever tactics and to protect the professor of his university, Martin Luther, from persecution by the Church and the Imperial Government. Despite his support for Luther's Reformation cause, he confessed himself to the Protestant denomination only on his deathbed. For diplomatic reasons he had never met Luther in person.
