Freedom Village

<freedom village>(2017) is a video based on information and records about people in Daesung-dong, UN citizens who physically exist but who are absent in system on the Korean Peninsula since armistice. Those who led armistice rebuilt a village here where it is hard for people to inhabit because the village is too close to military demarcation line, and it is named ‘Freedom Village’ . ‘Freedom Village’ made politically and artificially during the cold war era right after the Korean War, still exists within DMZ of Korea as internal and external territory while it is hiding its existence in Korea’s modern history. This video shows historic fiction and error manipulated and concealed through our examination, chase, and imagination about ‘Freedom Village’. Through this, out of dry perception of special political situation within Korea, a change is provided to perceive irrationality and contradiction of the world surrounding us and to look at the common life of human.

Moon Kyungwon and Jeon Joonho(both of them were born in 1969).’s recent artistic endeavors center on News from Nowhere, a collaboration project that focuses on creating an interdisciplinary platform. Their site-specific collaborative platform was initially presented at Kassel DOCUMENTA 13(2012) and since then, has been shown at the Korea Artist Prize exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea(2012); the Sullivan Galleries, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago(2013); Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich(2015). Moon Kyungwon and Jeon Joonho’s other projects include The Ways of Folding Space & Flying,the Korean Pavilion at Venice Biennale(2015); and Freedom Village, Frieze project in London and SCAI THE BATHHOUSE in Tokyo(2017). Moon Kyungwon and Jeon Joonho won Snow Art Award(Gwangju Biennale, 2012). This Year’s Artist Award(jointly organized by National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and SBS Culture Foundation, 2012), and Multitude Art Prize, UCCA, Beijing, 2013.
