In the foreground, we see a woman returning from fieldwork, carrying a large sack of grass on her shoulder. In the distance, silhouettes carrying similar sacks follow her. Her attire and the painting's title suggest that the work comes from the artist's residency in France, when Grigorescu became familiar with plein air painting during his stay in Barbizon, a small village in northern France with great artistic significance.
